Resounding Ascenseur pour l’échafaud
Soundtrack by Miles Davis
Ellister van der Molen – trumpet and narrative
Jos Machtel – double bass
Miles Davis released his groundbreaking album Kind of Blue in 1959, and it is still the best-selling jazz album of all time. But the revolutionary soundtrack Miles wrote for Louis Malle’s Ascenseur pour l’échafaud two years earlier is at least just as significant, not in the last place because of the band’s unique approach: they improvised while watching the movie, letting the images inspire their music. Trumpeter Ellister van der Molen discusses the film’s origin story and provides a musical context, and will perform a contemporary interpretation together with bassist Jos Machtel.
